Discover Kinderdijk: a journey along iconic windmills
A beautiful trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinderdijk
Step aboard the James Cook and be taken on a journey to Kinderdijk, one of the most iconic locations in the Netherlands. This day trip offers everything that makes the perfect outing: relaxation, history, and breathtaking views. Enjoy a unique combination of our comfortable boat tour and a visit to the world-famous windmills.
The journey to Kinderdijk: history and nature from the water
During the boat trip to Kinderdijk, you’ll experience the best that the Dutch waterways have to offer. From Rotterdam, we sail past the impressive skyline of the city, through the lively harbor area, and along the winding rivers. Enjoy the ever-changing views: modern architecture slowly gives way to the green banks of the North River and the serene beauty of the Dutch landscape.
Along the way, we’ll treat you to a delicious buffet lunch on board. While you enjoy fresh dishes, our captain will share interesting facts about the special places we pass by during the journey.
Kinderdijk: history and charm of the windmills
Once you arrive in Kinderdijk, you’ll be face to face with the 19 windmills that symbolize the Dutch fight against water. Take a walk along these centuries-old windmills and admire the picturesque surroundings.
For an even more special experience, you can choose a guided tour with an enthusiastic guide. They will tell you all about the life of the millers, how the windmills work, and the rich history of this UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit an authentic museum windmill or take a boat ride through the narrow canals to see Kinderdijk from a different perspective.
Or visit the Wisboom pumping station, where you can inspect the impressive flywheels in the engine room and admire the technology of water management. Also explore the Museummolen Nederwaard and Museummolen Blokweer, which provide fascinating insight into the history of milling and the operation of mills. Secondary Pumping Station De Fabriek shows a multi-screen film about the history of the mill complex and the origin of the name Kinderdijk.
A complete day full of experiences
The return journey offers another opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment. As we sail back towards Rotterdam while enjoying a buffet lunch, you can reflect on all the impressions of the day. The landscape gradually changes back to the urban setting of the port city. Around 4:30 PM, we will dock at the iconic Erasmus Bridge, where you can disembark after a day full of unforgettable memories.
