High tea Rotterdam
Anna Maria Russel, the Duchess of Bedford and a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria, became hungry around five in the afternoon. In her day, in the mid-nineteenth century, as a result of industrialization and the advent of lighting, people ate later and later. Anna combated her dip with tea, bread and butter consumed in her room.
Anna’s afternoon tea inspired both the queen, many members of the English nobility and other high classes. Over the years, scones, finger sandwiches and pastries also appeared on the table.
During the meal that residents of Britain ate in the early evening, fish, meat, eggs, bread and desserts came to the table. This meal they usually called a tea or a high tea which they used at a dining table or the high counter, a high table.
High Tea on a boat
In the Netherlands, we know afternoon tea mainly as a high tea. It is best enjoyed on a nice lazy afternoon, sailing through Rotterdam and its harbours. Our kitchen staff will prepare the most delicious high tea for you. With us on board you can relax with your family, relatives, friends or colleagues. The cruise takes about two and a half hours. So there is plenty of opportunity for a nice chat.
Special High Tea
The high tea begins immediately after the sailing from the Spido jetty. While our people serve the delicacies, we set course for the Botlek area. The construction of this vast landscape allowed Rotterdam to grow into the largest port in the world in the 1950s. There is much to discover: shipyards, docks, containers and ships of all shapes and sizes. You will also get a view from the water of the famous Rotterdam skyline and icons such as the Erasmus Bridge, the Euromast and the ss Rotterdam.
